The prices on your chart arrive from the exchange as a live stream, and someone pays to receive it. That stream is market data. This lesson is short: what you need, how to get it, and the one thing to check before you go live.
What market data is
Market data is the live feed of prices and trades from the exchange. For the futures you trade (ES, NQ, GC, CL and their micros) that exchange is the CME. The price travels a short pipe to reach your screen. Tap through it.
Where the price on your screen comes from
Prices don't appear from nowhere. They travel down a short pipe from the exchange to your screen. Tap each stage.

Exchange
Where trades actually happen. For the futures in this course that's the CME. It matches buyers and sellers and sets the official price.
Everything else just copies from here, so this is the one true price.
The two routes for getting it
Getting real-time data comes down to one question: are you trading a prop-firm account, or your own capital? Tap the card that’s you.
Two routes to your data. Which is you?
Before you trade live, check one thing
Whatever route you take, verify one thing before a live trade: your platform is on real-time data, not delayed. Most platforms show a badge on the chart. A 10-minute delay isn’t slow data, it’s the wrong price. See it.
The one check before you trade live
Before a single live trade, verify your platform is on real-time data. On delayed data your screen (solid) freezes minutes behind while the real market (faint) runs ahead. Buy at any point and see where you actually fill.
Your screen shows the true price, so when you Buy you fill exactly where you saw. You act on the truth.
To trade futures live you need real-time CME data. Two routes: a prop-firm account (data comes bundled on the firm’s platform like Rithmic or Tradovate, though TradingView needs its own feed), or your own capital (a personal CME subscription, about $15 to $25 a month). Either way, always confirm your platform is on real-time data before you go live. Next up: Module 2, where you set up TradingView properly.
